"Victoria Land", in the South-Polar regions, discovered by Capt. Sir J. C

" Victoria Land", in the South-Polar regions, discovered by Capt. Sir J. C. Ross, 1844. In the beginning of the year 1839, the British Government...having determined on fitting out an expedition, for the purpose of investigating the phenomena of terrestrial magnetism in various remote countries, and for prosecuting maritime geographical discovery in the high southern latitudes, H.M. ships Erebus and Terror, commissioned by Captain Sir James Clark Ross, sailed from Chatham on the 29th of September, 1839. In addition to carrying out the above-mentioned leading views, it was enjoined to the officers, that they should use every exertion to collect the various objects of natural history which the many heretofore unexplored countries about to be visited would afford. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Victoria Land" takes us back to the 19th century, a time of great exploration and discovery. Captured by Captain Sir J. C. Ross in 1844, this image showcases the icy landscape of the South-Polar regions. The photograph is an engraving from the Illustrated London News, providing a glimpse into the British Government's expedition to investigate terrestrial magnetism and conduct maritime geographical discoveries in remote countries. The H. M. ships Erebus and Terror were commissioned for this purpose, setting sail from Chatham in September 1839 under Captain Sir James Clark Ross. In addition to their scientific mission, these brave officers were also tasked with collecting various objects of natural history from unexplored lands they would encounter along their journey. This commitment to knowledge acquisition highlights both the spirit of adventure and scientific curiosity that defined this era. The image itself captures a breathtaking view of Victoria Land, showcasing towering icebergs floating majestically on calm waters. The coldness emanating from the scene is palpable as smoke billows out from one of the sailing ships anchored nearby. Stephen Sly's skillful rendering transports us back in time, allowing us to appreciate both the beauty and harshness of Antarctica during this period. It serves as a reminder of humanity's relentless pursuit for understanding our world through exploration and scientific inquiry.
