Torch light procession in New York, 1844. Creator: Unknown

Torch light procession in New York, 1844. A parade held by supporters of James Knox Polk, winner of the presidential election. The large building to the left off the view is Tammany Hall, brilliantly illuminated; the balconies filled with company hurraing with extacy; and the steps crowded with spectators. Across the street is suspended, from the attic of the hall to a lofty young hickory-tree, a large banner, inscribed with the candidates name[s - Polk & George M. Dallas]. In the procession are a large eagle, backed by a wreath; a huge ship, inscribed " Free Trade", and " Sailors Rights", on the sails; and a large transparent star, inscribed " Texas" ; whilst the brilliancy of the whole is heightened by a powerful Drummond light. Torch Light Procession in New York, 1844 - A Vibrant Celebration of Democracy

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the essence of a torch light procession held in New York City back in 1844. The parade was organized by ardent supporters of James Knox Polk, who had emerged victorious in the presidential election. The scene is illuminated with an enchanting glow emanating from Tammany Hall, a prominent building on the left side of the image. Balconies overflow with exuberant spectators cheering and celebrating with unbridled ecstasy. Across the street, a magnificent banner proudly displays the names of Polk and his running mate George M. Dallas, suspended between Tammany Hall's attic and a majestic young hickory tree. As part of this grand spectacle, various symbolic elements march through the streets: a large eagle backed by a wreath symbolizing freedom; an immense ship adorned with sails proclaiming "Free Trade" and "Sailors Rights"; and an impressive transparent star emblazoned with "Texas". Adding to this mesmerizing display is the powerful Drummond light that enhances every detail, casting its brilliance upon both participants and onlookers alike. This historic moment was captured by an unknown creator and later featured in the renowned publication "Illustrated London News" in 1844. The photograph serves as a testament to America's vibrant political landscape during that era—a time when passionate citizens took to the streets to express their support for their chosen leader while embracing democracy at its finest.
