The Temple of Vesta in Rome, c.1809-c.1812. The small, round building is traditionally called the Temple of Vesta, incorrectly, as it turns out, for the god to which the temple was consecrated remains unknown. The fact that every detail is fully worked up suggests that the drawing was meant for sale. Still, it does not seem to be fully finished, for Knip would certainly have introduced some colourful accents in the clothing worn by the local folk loitering about

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, created by Dutch artist Josephus Augustus Knip around 1809-1812, depicts the Temple of Vesta in Rome. The small, round building, surrounded by columns and adorned with a drinking fountain, has long been referred to as the Temple of Vesta, but recent research suggests that the god to whom the temple was consecrated remains a mystery. The intricately detailed drawing, with every element fully realized, indicates that it was intended for sale. However, it appears that Knip may have left some finishing touches incomplete, such as the addition of colorful accents in the clothing of the local figures gathered about. The temple, which is now a ruined structure, stands proudly amidst the bustling cityscape of ancient Rome. The oxen at the fountain and the columns, both worn and grand, add to the rich heritage and history of this magnificent site. This beautiful drawing, with its subtle use of graphite, invites us to imagine the sights, sounds, and stories of Rome in the 19th century.
