Sword of the Emperor Napoleon, at Windsor Castle, 1850. Creator: Unknown

Sword of the Emperor Napoleon, at Windsor Castle, 1850. This interesting relic of the Emperor is preserved in the magnificent collection of arms in the north corridor at Windsor Castle. The hilt and guard of the sword are of or-molu, beautifully chased, the style of ornamentation being in the classic taste which arose after the first Revolution: the head of Medusa, the thunderbolts of Jupiter, figures of Neptune, &c. being amongst the enrichments. The blade is engraved for a short way below the hilt, and gilded, and a small shield-formed part is blue. The scabbard is of black leather, the chape, &c. being of or-molu. A sword similar in character to this is, we believe, in the possession of the Duke of Wellington, and it was taken at Waterloo. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases the Sword of Emperor Napoleon, a historical relic housed in the impressive armory of Windsor Castle. The exact creator of this photograph remains unknown, but it was published in the Illustrated London News in 1850. The sword, which once belonged to the legendary French military and political leader, is a marvel of 19th-century craftsmanship. The hilt and guard are intricately decorated with ormolu, a gold-plated alloy, displaying classic motifs that emerged after the French Revolution. The head of Medusa, thunderbolts of Jupiter, and figures of Neptune are among the ornate embellishments. The blade, engraved and gilded, is a sight to behold, while a small shield-shaped part is a striking blue. The scabbard is made of black leather, with the chape and other ornaments crafted from ormolu. A sword of similar character is believed to be in the possession of the Duke of Wellington, who famously defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. This sword, taken from the Emperor himself, is a testament to the historical significance of the conflict between France and Britain during the Napoleonic Wars. The photograph, taken in black and white, captures the essence of a bygone era, evoking the spirit of the 19th century and the grandeur of the Victorian age. The Sword of Emperor Napoleon at Windsor Castle remains an enduring symbol of military history and the legacies of the great leaders of the past.
