EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic St Martin in the Wall church, located in Prague's Old Town. Built during the 12th and 15th centuries, this Gothic masterpiece stands adjacent to the ancient city walls of Bohemia, now known as the Czech Republic. Intriguingly, it was within these hallowed walls that a significant event took place in 1414. Jan of Hradec, the parish priest and an ardent supporter of reformist theologian Jan Hus, introduced Communion sub utraque for the first time. This practice involved offering both consecrated bread and wine to worshippers. The image is sourced from "History of Czechoslovakia in Outline" by J. V. Polisensky, published by Sphinx Publishers Ltd in Prague back in 1947. The monochrome aesthetic adds a timeless quality to this depiction of St Martin in the Wall. As we gaze upon this photograph today, we are transported through time - witnessing not only a physical structure but also a pivotal moment in religious history. It serves as a reminder of how faith has shaped our world throughout different centuries and cultures. Let us appreciate this remarkable piece of architecture that has withstood countless decades while remaining an emblematic symbol of Christianity and spiritual devotion within Czechoslovakia (now known as the Czech Republic).
