A Self-Denying Policy!, 1882. Artist: Joseph Swain

A Self-Denying Policy!, 1882. The French sailor congratulates John Bull on a job well done, and proposes to share in the glory. The British fleet had just been involved in putting down an uprising in Egypt which had been led by Colonel Arabi. The protest had been against European involvement in Egyptian affairs. After riots in Alexandria in which some 2, 000 Europeans died, the British launched their attack on the 11th July 1882. The French fleet, however, refused to cooperate with Britain, despite having formed a joint squadron with them. From Punch, or the London Charivari, July 29, 1882

A Self-Denying Policy!, 1882

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a powerful and thought-provoking print that captures the political tensions of its time. Created by artists Joseph Swain and John Tenniel, this satirical cartoon depicts an important moment in history when the British fleet was involved in suppressing an uprising led by Colonel Arabi in Egypt. In the image, we see a French sailor congratulating John Bull, symbolizing Britain, on their successful intervention in Egypt. The sailor proposes to share in the glory, highlighting France's desire for recognition despite refusing to cooperate with Britain during the conflict. The print reflects the complex dynamics of foreign policy and alliances during the 19th century. It also alludes to broader themes such as imperialism and European involvement in Egyptian affairs. The monochrome engraving adds a sense of seriousness and gravity to the scene, emphasizing its historical significance. With its detailed caricatures and clever symbolism, "A Self-Denying Policy!" serves as both a critique of foreign policy decisions and a commentary on national pride. This heritage image reminds us of how politics can shape international relations and highlights the importance of cooperation among nations. As we delve into this artwork from over a century ago, it invites us to reflect on our own contemporary world order and consider how diplomacy continues to play a crucial role in shaping global events.
