Photographic crayon portrait of Squire May, late 19th century. Creator: Unknown

A black-and-white photographic crayon portrait of Squire May on thin fiberboard. He wears a dark colored three-piece suit, complete with jacket, vest, white collared shirt, and black bowtie. His hair has turned white with age and he has a full beard and mustache. The artist used charcoal and gray pastel, the former for enhancing and darkening and the latter for highlighting the photographic image. When placed alongside 2012.42.16.1, the two images show that it was at one time a single image with the man on the left and the woman on the right. Their shoulders overlap the central border and the lines meet up perfectly, as do scratch marks on the verso

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black-and-white photographic crayon portrait captures the essence of Squire May, a distinguished gentleman from the late 19th century. The unknown artist skillfully used charcoal and gray pastel to enhance and highlight the photographic image, creating a striking representation of Mr. May. Dressed in a dark colored three-piece suit, complete with jacket, vest, white collared shirt, and black bowtie, Squire May exudes elegance and sophistication. His hair has turned white with age, adding an air of wisdom to his appearance. A full beard and mustache frame his face with distinction. What makes this portrait even more intriguing is its connection to another image in the collection (2012.42.16.1). When placed side by side, it becomes evident that these two portraits were once part of a single image featuring both Mr. May and a woman on opposite sides. Their shoulders overlap seamlessly along the central border while scratch marks on the verso align perfectly. As we admire this remarkable piece at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), we are transported back in time to witness not only Squire May's individuality but also his place within history as an African American man during this pivotal period in America's past.
