Marie Curie, Polish-born French physicist, 1925
Marie Curie, Polish-born French physicist, 1925. Marie Curie (1867-1934) in her office at the Radium Institute, Paris, of which she was director of research from 1918-1934. Marie and her husband Pierre Curie continued the work on radioactivity started by Henri Becquerel. In 1898, they discovered two new elements, polonium and radium. Marie did most of the work of producing these elements, and to this day her notebooks are still too radioactive to use. She went on to become the first woman to be awarded a doctorate in France, and continued her work after Pierres death in 1906. In 1903 the Curies shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with Becquerel. Marie won a second Nobel Prize, for chemistry, in 1911

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the brilliant mind of Marie Curie, a Polish-born French physicist, in 1925. In her office at the prestigious Radium Institute in Paris, where she served as director of research from 1918 until her passing in 1934, Marie is seen seated at her desk surrounded by shelves filled with books and scientific instruments. Marie Curie's groundbreaking work on radioactivity began alongside her husband Pierre Curie after they continued Henri Becquerel's initial discoveries. Together, they unearthed two new elements: polonium and radium. The process of producing these elements was predominantly carried out by Marie herself; however, even today, her notebooks remain too radioactive to handle safely. Not only did Marie become the first woman to earn a doctorate in France but she also persevered with her scientific endeavors following Pierre's tragic death in 1906. Her remarkable contributions were recognized when she shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with Becquerel in 1903 and later received a second Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1911. This powerful portrait showcases Marie Curie as an emblematic figure who defied societal norms and paved the way for women scientists worldwide. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of aspiring researchers who strive to make significant advancements within their respective fields.
