London-Manchester Air Race: Mr Jack Alcock and his Maurice Farman biplane, 1914 (1934). The first all-British aeroplane to finish a long-distance race. John William Alcock (1892-1919) was a captain in the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force who piloted the first non-stop transatlantic flight from St John s, Newfoundland, Canada to Clifden, Connemara, Ireland, in 1919, with Arthur Whitten Brown as navigator. Alcock participated in the 1914 Hendon to Manchester and return air race, flying a Farman biplane. From History of British Aviation 1908-1914, Volume II, by R.
