The Linendraper Bold, 1878, (c1918). John Gilpin serves a customer in his drapers shop. Gilpin was the subject of a comic ballad of 1782 by William Cowper entitled " The Diverting History of John Gilpin". The ballad, based on real-life character, describes how, on a journey to Edmonton (north in London), Gilpin, a draper, became separated from his wife and children after losing control of his horse, and ended up in the town of Ware, ten miles away from his intended destination. From " The Diverting History of John Gilpin", by William Cowper. [Frederick Warne and Co. London & New York, c1918]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a scene from "The Linendraper Bold" by Randolph Caldecott, dating back to 1878 but printed in 1918. In this image, we see John Gilpin serving a customer in his drapers shop. The inspiration for this comic ballad came from William Cowper's "The Diverting History of John Gilpin" published in 1782. Based on a real-life character, the ballad recounts the misadventures of Gilpin as he loses control of his horse during a journey to Edmonton and ends up in Ware, ten miles away from his intended destination. This image showcases the charm and humor that Caldecott brings to life through his illustrations. The attention to detail is evident as we observe the fabric choices displayed on shelves and tables within the shop. Both men and women are depicted engaging in this bustling trade, highlighting the importance of linen materials during this time period. As we delve into this snapshot of eighteenth-century England, it becomes apparent that Caldecott masterfully captures not only the essence of daily life but also infuses it with wit and whimsy. This print serves as a reminder of our rich heritage while offering us an opportunity to appreciate both artistry and storytelling intertwined within one frame.
