Amongst the various landing-places on the Calabrian shore chosen by the several Garibaldian expeditions which set out from Sicily to obtain a footing on the main land was the town of Palmi...Palmi, the chief town of a district, is well built, and contains several good houses. It is situated...on a perpendicular mass of rocky cliff rising from the sea, above a narrow creek, in which the fishing-boats of its inhabitants find a scanty shelter. The cliff is covered with gardens of oranges and olives, behind which are higher and broken hills, clothed with chestnut forests'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

This print depicts the Landing of a portion of the National Army at the Marina di Palmi, Calabria, in 1860. The image is derived from a sketch by a special artist for the Illustrated London News. The scene unfolds as the Garibaldian expedition, led by Giuseppe Garibaldi, selected Palmi as one of the landing places on the Calabrian shore to establish a foothold on the Italian mainland. Palmi, the principal town of the district, is well-built and boasts several fine houses, nestled on a steep, rocky cliff above a narrow creek.
