King Richard I beside the dead body of his father, King Henry II, 1189

King Richard I (1157-1199) beside the dead body of his father, King Henry II (1154-1189), 1189. Richard was King of England from 1189 to 1199. He was known as Richard the Lionheart, or C?ur de Lion, even before his accession because of his military reputation. He spent little of his reign in England, setting out on the Third Crusade in 1190, and from 1194 onwards fighting to regain territories in France. He remains one of the very few Kings of England remembered by reputation, not number. Henry ruled as King of England from 1154 to 1189. He was the first Plantagenet (or Angevin) King. King Richard I beside the dead body of his father, King Henry II, 1189

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print, we witness a poignant moment in history as King Richard I stands solemnly beside the lifeless body of his father, King Henry II. The year is 1189, and England mourns the passing of a monarch while witnessing the rise of another. Richard, already renowned for his military prowess even before ascending to the throne, earned himself the title "Richard the Lionheart" or "Cœur de Lion". However, he spent little time ruling England during his reign from 1189 to 1199. Instead, he embarked on the Third Crusade in 1190 and fought tirelessly to reclaim territories in France from 1194 onwards. Henry II was an influential figure who ruled as King of England from 1154 until his death in 1189. As the first Plantagenet (or Angevin) King, he left behind a lasting legacy that would shape English history for centuries to come. This engraving captures not only a significant moment between father and son but also reflects upon themes such as family dynamics and succession within monarchy. With their hands together and heads bowed in reverence for their shared lineage and duty to their country, it symbolizes both grief and determination. Preserved through time by The Print Collector's meticulous craftsmanship, this image serves as a powerful reminder of these two iconic figures who shaped medieval Europe with their ambitions on battlefields far beyond England's shores.
