Georgii Iakovlevich Sedov and Iugan, a Sailor; return to the Ship After a Ten-Day Excursion, 1912. Creator: Mikhail Alekseevich Pavlov
Georgii Iakovlevich Sedov and Iugan, a Sailor; return to the Ship After a Ten-Day Excursion, 1912. From a collection consisting of an album and individual photographs from the family archive of geologist Mikhail Alekseevich Pavlov (1884-1938). The collection depicts an expedition undertaken by Senior Lieutenant Georgii Iakovlevich Sedov (1877-1914) in the years 1912-14. Sedov, whose health was already failing when he set out for the pole by sled in early 1914, died before reaching his objective. The members of the expedition nonetheless carried out extensive surveying and scientific observations while wintering on Novaya Zemlya in 1912-13 and made significant contributions to knowledge of northern geography. This print captures the moment when Senior Lieutenant Georgii Iakovlevich Sedov and Iugan, a Sailor, return to their ship after a ten-day excursion in 1912. The image is part of a collection from the family archive of geologist Mikhail Alekseevich Pavlov, who documented an expedition led by Sedov in the years 1912-14.
Despite facing health challenges that ultimately led to his untimely death before reaching his objective at the pole, Sedov and his team made significant contributions to northern geography during their time on Novaya Zemlya in 1912-13. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of their dedication to exploration and scientific discovery in harsh Arctic conditions.
The image exudes a sense of historical significance, with Sedov and Iugan standing proudly against the frosty backdrop of Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia. Their clothing reflects the fashion of the early 20th century, adding to the authenticity and heritage captured in this moment frozen in time.
