Epsom Race Course, 1940

Epsom Race Course, 1940. The first recorded race was held on the Downs in 1661, although it is likely that racing was established much earlier than this. Epsom is referenced in the diary of Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) in 1663 and Charles II (1630-1685) is said to have been a racegoer there. From Flat Racing published by Seeley, Service & Co, Ltd. London, 1940

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the historic Epsom Race Course in 1940. The image showcases the renowned racetrack that has been a hub of horse racing for centuries. Established in 1661, with possible origins even earlier, Epsom Race Course holds a significant place in British sporting history. The photograph's sepia tones evoke a sense of nostalgia as we glimpse into the past. The lettering on the print reminds us of its origin from Seeley, Service & Co, Ltd. , a prominent publisher based in London during that era. Epsom Race Course is not only famous for its races but also for its association with notable figures such as Samuel Pepys and King Charles II. In fact, Pepys mentioned Epsom in his diary entries from 1663, while it is believed that King Charles II himself enjoyed attending races at this iconic venue. As we gaze upon this monochrome snapshot frozen in time, we can almost feel the excitement and anticipation that filled the air during those thrilling moments on race days. This image serves as a testament to both the enduring legacy of Epsom Race Course and the rich heritage of horse racing in England. With every detail captured by The Print Collector - an esteemed source dedicated to preserving historical prints - this fascinating piece transports us back to an era when flat racing was at its peak and Epsom stood proudly as one of Britain's most prestigious racetracks.
