Display stand with spools of thread and needles from Maes Millinery Shop, 1941-1994

Three-tiered metal stand with a lip at the front of each tier. The words " Kolor Treet" are stamped on both sides in yellow ink. A paper insert on the top back reads in black ink: " DUART KOLOR TREET Quick Find Selection Chart" and lists several colors of hair dye. The bottom of the stand is hollow and has only one of four black rubber feet remaining. The stand is accompanied by nine spools containing fibers in various forms and fibers, two empty spools, and one large sewing needle. Mae Reeves (1912-2016) was a pioneering African-American milliner who was famous for her custom-made hats. Her business, Maes Millinery Shop in downtown Philadelphia, was one of the first shops in the city to be owned by a woman of African American heritage

This print showcases a display stand from Maes Millinery Shop, offering a glimpse into the world of African-American fashion in the mid-20th century. The three-tiered metal stand, adorned with the words "Kolor Treet" stamped in vibrant yellow ink on both sides, exudes an air of vintage charm. A paper insert at the top back features a black ink inscription that reads "DUART KOLOR TREET Quick Find Selection Chart" listing various colors of hair dye. The stand's bottom is hollow and bears only one remaining black rubber foot out of four. Accompanying this remarkable piece are nine spools containing fibers in different forms and textures, two empty spools, and a large sewing needle. These items provide insight into the meticulous craftsmanship that went into creating custom-made hats at Mae Reeves' renowned millinery shop.
