EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of Cromwell House on Highgate Hill, a magnificent mansion from the seventeenth century. Built in 1638, this large house in north London has a fascinating history. Contrary to popular belief, Oliver Cromwell had no connection with the house. However, John Ireton, brother of Oliver Cromwell's favorite son-in-law, briefly resided in nearby Lauderdale House. This association led to the building being known as Cromwell House in the early nineteenth century. The image showcases the architectural beauty of this historic structure against a backdrop of lush greenery. The imposing entrance gate stands tall at the forefront while a flight of steps leads up to it. The monochrome effect adds an air of nostalgia and timelessness to this snapshot from Wonderful London Volume 3. Photographed by Donald McLeish and featured in Arthur St John Adcock's publication, this picture offers us a glimpse into London's rich heritage and its captivating cityscape during the 1930s. It serves as a reminder that behind every landmark lies stories waiting to be discovered. As we admire this stunning piece of British architecture, let us appreciate how historical narratives can shape our perception of places and remind us that even misconceptions can add layers of intrigue to our understanding of these remarkable structures.
