Christ in Majesty with the Virgin and St. John the Evangelist... c. 1300-1330. Creator: Unknown

Christ in Majesty with the Virgin and St. John the Evangelist: Single Leaf from a Book of Rules, c. 1300-1330. In this complex image, the Virgin and St. John stand next to Christ at the Last Judgment as the final trumpets blow. Assembled below are members of the Confraternity of St. John the Evangelist in Venice, robed in white with the insignia of their order: a pastoral staff and crosses. This beautiful page comes from a mariegola, or the book of rules of this confraternity. During the late Middle Ages, every town had one or more confraternities, organizations of lay people who undertook to carry out the ideals of the Franciscans and Dominicans. Confraternities were created for the special veneration of a saint or the Holy Sacrament (the body and blood of Christ). One of their tasks was to strengthen the faith of their members

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable artwork titled "Christ in Majesty with the Virgin and St. John the Evangelist". Created by an unknown artist during the 14th century, this single leaf from a Book of Rules transports us to a momentous scene at the Last Judgment. In this complex image, Christ is depicted in all His glory, flanked by the Virgin Mary and St. John. As the final trumpets resound, they stand as witnesses to this divine event. Below them are members of the Confraternity of St. John the Evangelist in Venice, distinguished by their white robes adorned with crosses and pastoral staffs – symbols representing their order. The mariegola or book of rules was an essential document for confraternities during medieval times. These lay organizations aimed to embody Franciscan and Dominican ideals while fostering faith among their members. Each town had its own confraternity dedicated to venerating a specific saint or sacrament. Crafted meticulously on gold-parchment using ink and tempera techniques, this exquisite manuscript exemplifies heritage art at its finest. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection, it serves as a testament to both religious devotion and artistic skill from centuries past. Heritage Images presents this stunning print that allows us to appreciate not only the beauty but also the historical significance behind such masterpieces created by anonymous hands in Venice during Italy's rich cultural legacy.
