Craco - Il Paese Fantasma

EDITORS COMMENTS
Craco - Il Paese Fantasma: A Haunting Beauty". This print showcases the ghostly allure of Craco, a small town in the province of Matera. Once home to 779 inhabitants, its historic center became a true ghost town after an evacuation in the 1960s. However, this phenomenon has only added to the unique charm of Craco, making it a sought-after film set for various movies. Traces of Craco's origins can be found in ancient tombs dating back to the 8th century BC. Like other nearby settlements, it likely provided shelter for Greek settlers from Metaponto who moved to hilly terrain, possibly escaping malaria that plagued the plains. Later on, Craco became a Byzantine settlement and flourished with agricultural development initiated by Italo-Byzantine monks in the 10th century. In 1963, a massive landslide forced the evacuation of Craco and relocation downstream to Craco Peschiera. At that time, over 2000 people called this place home. The landslide was believed to have been triggered by infrastructure works such as sewage and water networks serving the town. Despite this forced exodus, Craco remains untouched and has transformed into a rare kind of ghost town. Today, its streets cannot be traversed freely; however, there are plans within a year for two safe routes through this eerie village. Additionally, paranormal enthusiasts claim sightings of spectral figures in Craco and report particularly unsettling noises emanating from its abandoned houses. This stunning print captures not only the haunting beauty but also reveals glimpses into both past and present mysteries surrounding "Craco - Il Paese Fantasma.
