Holyrood Palace

1924: The Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence of the Queen in Scotland. The Palace stands at the end of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh and is a popular tourist attraction. The Abbey of Holy Rood ( rood meaning cross) was founded in 1128 by King David I and the Palace was built next to the ruins by James IV in 1498. The building was extensively reconstructed in 1671 on the orders of Charles II; attacked in 1544 by the Earl of Hereford, it was also damaged by fire in 1650. This print captures the timeless beauty of Holyrood Palace, the official residence of the Queen in Scotland. Standing proudly at the end of Edinburgh's Royal Mile, this magnificent palace is steeped in history and remains a beloved tourist destination. Originally built next to the ruins of the Abbey of Holy Rood in 1498 by James IV, Holyrood Palace has witnessed centuries of Scottish royalty. Its foundations were laid by King David I back in 1128, giving it a rich historical significance. However, its journey hasn't been without challenges; it endured attacks from Earl Hereford in 1544 and suffered fire damage during tumultuous times in 1650. The photograph showcases the grandeur and architectural splendor that was extensively reconstructed on Charles II's orders in 1671. Alfred Hind Robinson skillfully captured this panoramic view with his lens, emphasizing every intricate detail against a striking backdrop. As you gaze upon this remarkable image, you can almost feel yourself transported back through time to an era when kings and queens roamed these hallowed halls. The solemnity and grace emanating from Holyrood Palace are palpable even through monochromatic tones.
