Coat of arms 17th century Peake and Harrison

This image is from a copperplate engraving, and shows part of a roll of arms from Richard Blomes Britannia, an atlas published in 1673. It features the coats of arms of people who contributed towards the completion of the work a starting with King Charles II. Each page includes 35 coats of arms, presented here in groups of two. These coats of arms are from folio (page) 10 of the work. In old English, ans appeared as a longs (which looks like an f ), while ss appeared as fs. Com was an abbreviation for County. A number is assigned to each benefactor. Here are the accompanying texts (followed by modernised English where appropriate): 295. Sir William PEAKE of ye Citty of London of Old Holt near Colchefter in Efsex & of Grayes alias Colt hall in Cavendifh parifh in Suffolk Kt. (Colchester in Essex; Cavendish parish in Suffolk). 296. Richard HARRISON of Balls in ye parifh of St. Iohn Hartford in ye Com Hartford Efq (in the parish of St. John; Ware, Hertfordshire)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a 17th-century coat of arms belonging to Peake and Harrison. The image, derived from a copperplate engraving found in Richard Blomes Britannia atlas published in 1673, provides a glimpse into the historical significance of this artwork. The coat of arms represents individuals who contributed to the completion of Blomes' work, beginning with King Charles II himself. Each page within the atlas features 35 coats of arms, presented here in pairs. This particular photograph captures folio (page) 10. Notably, during this era, certain linguistic conventions were prevalent. For instance, "ans" was depicted as a longs symbol resembling an "f" while "ss" appeared as "fs". Additionally, the abbreviation for County was often written as "Com". In this specific case, we see two benefactors represented by their respective coats of arms: Sir William Peake and Richard Harrison. Sir William Peake hailed from Old Holt near Colchester in Essex and Grayes alias Colt Hall in Cavendish parish located in Suffolk. On the other hand, Richard Harrison resided at Balls within St. John Hartford parish situated in Hertfordshire. This extraordinary print not only offers an artistic representation but also serves as a valuable historical artifact that sheds light on the contributions made towards completing Blome's Britannia atlas during the 17th century.
