5928814 Pelisse, 3rd Zieten Hussars, HRH The Duke of Connaught, pre-1914 (pelisse) by Hungarian School, (20th Century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Pelisse, 3rd Zieten Hussars, worn by HRH The Duke of Connaught, pre-1914.
Both officers and men of hussar regiments wore the pelisse, or over jacket, which reflected the Hungarian origins of the hussars style of dress.
Prince Arthur (1850-1942) was the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He was named after one of his godfathers, Field Marshal Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington, on whose 81st birthday he was born.
In 1879, Arthur married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia. She was the daughter of Prince Friedrich Karl and a great-niece of Kaiser Wilhelm I (another of Arthurs godfathers). To mark the occasion, he was appointed colonel of the 3rd Zieten Hussars, a regiment of the Imperial German Army. From 1904, he served as its colonel-in-chief and in 1906 he was appointed a field marshal in the German Army.
Although purely ceremonial, these appointments reflected his familys close German ties. His mother, Queen Victoria, was the last British monarch from the House of Hanover. Through Prince Arthurs father, Prince Albert, he was also Duke of Saxony and Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.); eNational Army Museum; Hungarian, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a pelisse worn by HRH The Duke of Connaught, pre-1914. The pelisse, or over jacket, was an integral part of the hussar regiments' attire and reflected the Hungarian origins of their distinctive dress style. Prince Arthur, also known as HRH The Duke of Connaught, was the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Born on the 81st birthday of his godfather Field Marshal Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington, he carried a name steeped in military history. In 1879, Prince Arthur married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia, further solidifying his family's close German ties. To commemorate this union with royalty from Germany, Prince Arthur was appointed colonel of the prestigious 3rd Zieten Hussars regiment in the Imperial German Army. His connection to this cavalry unit deepened over time as he became its colonel-in-chief in 1904 and earned the esteemed rank of field marshal in 1906. While these appointments were purely ceremonial in nature, they symbolized not only Prince Arthur's familial ties but also highlighted his significant role within both British and German military circles. This remarkable photograph captures a moment frozen in time when tradition merged with history through fashion choices that transcended borders. It serves as a testament to Prince Arthur's distinguished position within two influential European nations during an era marked by political alliances and shifting power dynamics.
