EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Sudanese kettle drum, crafted around 1898 by the talented Sudanese School of the 19th century. Currently housed at the National Army Museum in London, this remarkable artifact is believed to have been seized from Dervish forces during the Battle of Omdurman, which took place between 1896 and 1899. Known as a Nihas or Nahas in Sudanese culture, this drum holds immense significance and represents both respect and social standing. Its heavy beaten copper shell is adorned with four pairs of bronze suspension rings encircling its rim. Additionally, there are 38 copper pegs meticulously placed to secure the tanned and shaved leather head, possibly made from cowskin. The top surface of the drumhead appears smooth while traces of hair remain on its sides. Perforations along the side allow for a perfect fit over the pegs surrounding the shell. Intricately woven twisted leather cords pass through eight holes on the edge of the head, forming four A VA shaped tensioning cords that converge at a ring beneath the shell. This extraordinary instrument not only serves as an emblematic representation of Sudan's rich musical heritage but also stands as a testament to historical events that unfolded during one of Africa's most significant conflicts – The Second Sudan War. With its exquisite craftsmanship and cultural importance, this Sudenese kettle drum truly captivates all who behold it.
