EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and captivating print showcases "Saint Medard, Patron Saint of Umbrella Sellers" in all his glory. Created around 1910 by the French School, this colour lithograph is part of a series featuring patron saints of various trades and professions. The image is from a private collection and was originally produced as a promotional card for Chocolat Aiguebelle. The illustration depicts Saint Medard, a revered French saint who lived between 457 and 545 AD. Known for his association with umbrellas, he became the patron saint of umbrella sellers due to an intriguing legend surrounding his childhood. As the story goes, an eagle once protected him from rain by hovering over him. This remarkable event has forever linked Saint Medard to the symbol of umbrellas. Chocolat Aiguebelle, established in 1869 by Trappist monks at their abbey in Aiguebelle, played a significant role in producing these exquisite trade cards during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Although production ceased at their factory in Donzere in 1978, the Compagnie Cherifienne de Chocolaterie continues to make chocolates under the brand name Aiguebelle today. This particular print captures not only the artistic beauty of Saint Medard but also represents a fascinating piece of history tied to both religious devotion and chocolate-making traditions. Its exceptional quality makes it an invaluable addition to any art enthusiast's collection.
