EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Sketches in Formosa" takes us back to the year 1895, offering a glimpse into the rich history of Taiwan. The engraving, created by William Heysham Overend and now part of a private collection, was originally featured in The Illustrated London News on June 8th of that same year. The image showcases an intriguing scene at Takow Harbour, where a group of black flag soldiers stands guard near imposing fortifications. Their traditional dress adds an air of mystique to the already mesmerizing landscape. In the foreground, we see boats and a tugboat transporting goods and people across the harbor's calm waters. A general can be seen inspecting the area with great attention to detail. His presence suggests that this location holds strategic importance for military purposes or perhaps even trade routes. The fortress-like rampart behind him further emphasizes its significance as a stronghold. One cannot help but marvel at how this engraving captures both the beauty and tension present in Formosa (now known as Taiwan) during this period. It serves as a reminder of how historical events shape landscapes and cultures over time. Bridgeman Images has preserved this remarkable piece from their Look and Learn / Illustrated Papers Collection, allowing us to appreciate its artistic value while also gaining insight into Taiwan's past.
