EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the grandeur of the Long Library at Sledmere, Yorkshire. Taken from Giles Worsley's book "England's Lost Houses" this image showcases the exquisite late 18th-century decoration and vaulted ceiling that adorn this stately home. Built in 1751 for Sir Richard Sykes, Sledmere House was later expanded by Sir Christopher Sykes. The renowned plasterer Joseph Rose was commissioned to embellish the interiors, leaving a lasting legacy of intricate plasterwork throughout the house. Tragically, Sledmere House suffered a devastating fire in 1911. However, thanks to its subsequent restoration and meticulous documentation through photography, it became an invaluable source for reconstruction efforts. In fact, it was the first house whose interiors were photographed for Country Life magazine. The photograph provides a glimpse into the opulence and architectural beauty of this historic residence. The vaulted ceiling stretches out majestically above rows upon rows of shelves filled with books—a testament to knowledge and intellectual pursuits cherished within these walls. Through this image captured by an English photographer from Bridgeman Images' collection, viewers can appreciate both the craftsmanship of C18th architecture and the artistry involved in preserving such treasures. It serves as a reminder of our rich cultural heritage while also inspiring awe at human resilience in restoring what once seemed lost forever.
