EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of art from the 17th century - a carved wooden Musketeer. Created by the English School, this intricate sculpture was part of an elaborate staircase at Cromwell House in Highgate, North London. The house underwent remodeling in 1638, and each newel of the staircase featured a different carved figure representing members of Cromwell's brigade. The Musketeer depicted in this print is holding a musket or possibly another type of light gun known as a caliver. What stands out about this carving is the exceptional attention to detail given to the bandolier worn by the soldier. It is meticulously portrayed, adding depth and realism to the artwork. Cromwell House held great historical significance as it was gifted by Oliver Cromwell himself to his daughter Bridget and her husband Henry Ireton. However, during restoration after their time, it is believed that two additional figures representing Cromwell and Ireton were destroyed. Tragically, these unique wooden figures were stolen during the 1980s and have not been recovered since then. Today, Cromwell House serves as the Ghanaian High Commission. This print offers us a glimpse into both artistic mastery and historical context. It reminds us of England's turbulent past during the English Civil War while highlighting one small but significant aspect - an exquisitely carved Musketeer frozen in time for all to admire.
