EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a fascinating piece of military history - the Mirliton, worn by the 11th Regiment of (Light) Dragoons in 1805. This unique headdress, made of metal and cloth, was originally popularized by the French Light Cavalry and is said to have been inspired by Oriental headwear. Interestingly, this distinctive cap was also adopted by German troops under the name Flugelmutze or winged cap. The "wing" effect was created by a cloth tail hanging freely from the crown. However, it seems that the 11th Light Dragoons did not wear this tail. The image showcases an other ranks soldier wearing this iconic mirliton. It is evident that every detail has been meticulously crafted to create an impressive display of military regalia. The combination of metal and cloth materials adds depth and texture to the headdress, making it truly stand out. This print is housed at the National Army Museum in London and belongs to their extensive collection dedicated to preserving military artifacts from various eras. It serves as a reminder of how fashion influences even within armed forces can transcend borders and inspire different nations' soldiers. With its historical significance and intricate design, this image offers viewers a glimpse into the past while highlighting one small but significant aspect of military attire during that time period.
