EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the 1947 cricket season, we witness a moment frozen in time. Cyril Washbrook, a legendary figure in Lancashire County Cricket Club's history, strides purposefully towards the pitch alongside his teammate Winston Place. Washbrook's remarkable career spanned over two decades, during which he left an indelible mark on the sport. With an impressive tally of 27,863 runs and 58 centuries in first-class matches for Lancashire, he was undoubtedly one of their greatest batsmen. In fact, his exceptional skills led to him being appointed as Lancashire's first-ever professional captain in 1954. Notably, Washbrook also represented England with distinction by playing 37 test matches for his country. His contributions both at home and abroad solidified his status as one of cricket's most respected figures. Accompanying Washbrook is Winston Place, another talented cricketer who made significant contributions to Lancashire County Cricket Club during his career. Over the course of nearly two decades and 298 first-class matches for the county team, Place amassed an impressive total of 14,605 runs with 34 centuries. Although not mentioned within the caption details provided by Colorsport Images regarding commercial use or any specific context surrounding this particular image print featuring these esteemed athletes from yesteryears; it nonetheless serves as a poignant reminder of their immense talent and enduring legacy within the world of cricket.
