At the time, Lansbury was a promising young player in Arsenal's academy system. He had already made his debut for the first team in the previous season, coming on as a substitute in a League Cup match against Blackburn Rovers. However, the 2008-2009 campaign presented an opportunity for him to further establish himself in the squad. The pre-season tour of Austria was an important part of Arsenal's preparations for the upcoming season.
