This evocative photograph captures the intense and dangerous reality of trench warfare during World War I. Taken in February 1915 on the Western Front in France, the image shows Lieutenant Kerr MC of the 1st World War's 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers, intently peering through a periscope installed in a trench on Rue de Bois. The use of periscopes was a crucial innovation in the war, allowing soldiers to observe enemy positions without exposing themselves to gunfire. However, this tactical advantage came with significant risk, as the periscope's height made the user a prime target for enemy snipers and artillery. Lieutenant Kerr's determined expression and focused gaze convey the immense pressure and responsibility that soldiers faced in the trenches.
