Constructed in 1548, the fountain was originally designed by architect Pierre Lescot and sculptor Jean Boulogne, also known as Jean de Boulogne or Le Boulogne. The fountain was a vital part of Parisian life, as it provided water to the city's residents and served as a gathering place for the local community.
