This historic photograph captures the daring attempt of French aviator Francois Reichelt as he tests his revolutionary new invention, a parachute, from the towering heights of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, in February 1912. With a determined expression on his face and wearing a heavy, bulky parachute harnessed to his body, Reichelt takes a leap of faith, jumping from the tower's second platform, some 110 meters (360 feet) above the ground. Unfortunately, Reichelt's test did not go as planned. As he plummeted towards the earth, the parachute failed to open properly, leaving him with a harrowing fall to the ground below.
