The scene was captured by the renowned German explorer and travel writer, Dr. Heinrich Barth, during his extensive journey through Africa. Barth, a brilliant scholar and linguist, embarked on his African expedition in 1849, driven by an insatiable curiosity for the unknown and a desire to expand European knowledge of the continent. His journey took him through the Sahara Desert, the Sudan region, and eventually to the heart of the West African Sokoto Caliphate, where he visited Kukawa.
