Noel Coypel Collection

Noel Coypel (1628-1707) was a French painter and art theorist. He was born in Paris, the son of Antoine Coypel, a court painter to Louis XIV. Noel's career began as an apprentice to his father, but he soon became an independent artist. His works were highly sought after by the French aristocracy and he was appointed director of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1695. He is best known for his religious paintings, which often featured vivid colors and dramatic compositions. His most famous work is The Death of St Francis Xavier (1694).
