EDITORS COMMENTS
Muette de Portici," or "The Dumb Girl of Portici," is a historic opera composed by Daniel Auber in 1828. This image is taken from Act 3, Scene 4 of the production, which depicts a pivotal moment in the opera's dramatic narrative. In the scene, the charismatic fisherman Masaniello (played by a passionate tenor) stands at the head of an enraged mob in a Naples square. His face is etched with determination and fury as he confronts Selva, a high-ranking official, who is shown cowardly hiding behind a group of soldiers. The tension between the two is palpable, as Masaniello's rebellion against the ruling class has reached a boiling point. The opera, set in 16th-century Naples, tells the story of the ill-fated love affair between Masaniello and the mute title character, Iphigenie, who is promised to the cruel Don Fernand. When Masaniello learns of her impending marriage, he is driven to lead a violent uprising against the Spanish rulers, ultimately resulting in a tragic and bloody conclusion. This powerful scene encapsulates the intensity and passion of the opera, as well as the historical context of the time. The image serves as a visual reminder of the tumultuous events that unfolded in Naples during the late 16th century, and the deep-rooted frustration and unrest that led to a pivotal moment in the city's history. The opera, first performed in Paris in 1828, remains a significant work in the history of opera, and this image offers a glimpse into its rich and compelling narrative. The passionate performance of Masaniello, the defiant confrontation with Selva, and the volatile energy of the mob all combine to make this a truly unforgettable moment in the world of opera.
