Electron flow

Electron flow. Computer model representing the flow of electrons through a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The " gas" is composed of many free electrons, which can move around in only one plane. The 2DEG possesses an electric potential. Irregularities in this potential produce a " bumpy" surface. The model shows the paths taken by three groups of electrons released into the gas from the bottom right corner. The electrons were deflected by the bumps in the gas, producing a branching pattern, with the greatest density of electrons represented by the darkest areas. The fish was added later. Modelled by Professor Eric Heller, Harvard University, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Electron Flow" showcases a computer model representing the mesmerizing movement of electrons through a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The 2DEG, resembling a gaseous state composed of numerous free electrons, is confined to one plane. Within this electrically charged environment, irregularities in the potential create a visually intriguing and undulating surface. In this artwork by Professor Eric Heller from Harvard University, three distinct groups of electrons are released into the gas from the bottom right corner. As they traverse through the 2DEG, their paths are deflected by the bumpy terrain, resulting in an intricate branching pattern that unfolds before our eyes. The density of electrons is represented by varying shades of darkness, with areas exhibiting higher concentrations appearing as deep shadows. Adding an unexpected touch to this scientific masterpiece is a fish swimming gracefully amidst the simulated electron flow. This artistic element injects creativity into an otherwise abstract representation of particle physics. The image serves as both an illustration and a work of art that seamlessly combines science and aesthetics. It offers viewers a glimpse into the hidden world where particles dance and interact within complex systems. With its striking patterns and meticulous detailing, this photograph invites us to contemplate the beauty found within scientific exploration.
