A train crosses the Royal Border Bridge, as fishermen are seen catching salmon in

A train crosses the Royal Border Bridge, as fishermen are seen catching salmon in the harbour mouth at Berwick Upon Tweed in Northumberland August 22, 2013. The Royal Border Bridge opened in the mid 19th century, completing a rail link from London to Edinburgh. It is located in Berwick Upon Tweed, Englands northernmost town, which has passed between English and Scottish control over a dozen times. Signs of ancient conflict - from centuries-old fortifications to historic battlefields - score the landscape around the English-Scottish border. But many living in the region lead lives straddling both sides, and express practical concerns about the possibility of a more formal split between the two nations in the event of a yes vote in next years referendum on Scottish independence, which will be held on September 18, 2014. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in time where the old and the new converge. A majestic train gracefully traverses the iconic Royal Border Bridge, while fishermen diligently cast their lines into the harbour mouth at Berwick Upon Tweed. The bridge, an engineering marvel of the mid 19th century, symbolizes the completion of a vital rail link between London and Edinburgh. Located in England's northernmost town, Berwick Upon Tweed has witnessed countless shifts in power between English and Scottish control throughout history. The landscape surrounding this border region bears scars from ancient conflicts - remnants of fortifications and historic battlefields serve as reminders of a turbulent past. However, amidst this historical backdrop lies a community that straddles both sides of the border. Many individuals living here express practical concerns about what may come if Scotland votes for independence in next year's referendum. Their lives are intertwined with both nations, making them acutely aware of how a formal split could impact their daily routines. Through Toby Melville's lens, we glimpse not only picturesque scenery but also contemplate deeper questions about identity and unity. This photograph encapsulates the delicate balance between tradition and progress, reminding us that even as borders shift over time, human connections endure across divides created by politics or geography.
