EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the renowned French military commander, Nicolas-Jean de Dieu Soult (1769-1851), also known as Soult or the Duke of Dalmatia. Soult rose to prominence during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, serving under Napoleon Bonaparte as one of his most trusted and capable marshals. Born in Soultz-sous-Forets, Lorraine, Soult began his military career in the Royal Army before joining the French Revolutionary forces in 1792. Soult's military prowess was evident in his early campaigns, including the Battle of Toulon in 1793, where he played a crucial role in the French victory. He continued to distinguish himself in battles such as the Battle of Marengo in 1800 and the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805. Soult's strategic mind and leadership abilities earned him the trust and admiration of Napoleon, who appointed him as a marshal of the French Empire in 1804. After Napoleon's abdication in 1814, Soult continued to serve in the French army under the Bourbon monarchy. However, he switched sides during the Hundred Days War in 1815, joining Napoleon once again. After Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo, Soult went into exile in Spain, where he served as the regent and later the prime minister. This print captures Soult in his later years, with a stern expression and military bearing that reflect his storied career. The Duke of Dalmatia's legacy as a brilliant military commander and a key figure in French history continues to be celebrated to this day.
