EDITORS COMMENTS
SMS Csikos: Austro-Hungarian Destroyer in Action during World War I This evocative image captures the Austro-Hungarian torpedo boat, SMS Csikos, in full force as it cuts through the waves during the First World War. Part of the Huszar class destroyers, SMS Csikos was one of 12 vessels commissioned by the Austro-Hungarian Navy between 1911 and 1913. With a top speed of 31 knots, these sleek and powerful destroyers were designed for high-speed patrols and offensive operations in the Adriatic Sea. The SMS Csikos, named after the Hungarian nobleman and military leader, Count Csikos, saw active service during the Great War. The vessel took part in several engagements against Italian and French forces, including the Battle of the Otranto Straits in August 1914 and the Battle of Durazzo in November 1916. In this photograph, the SMS Csikos is shown in its element, with the vast expanse of the Adriatic Sea stretching out behind it. The ship's powerful guns and torpedoes are ready for action, while the crew stands at their posts, focused and determined. The image is a poignant reminder of the intense and often brutal battles fought on the water during the First World War. The SMS Csikos and its sister ships played a crucial role in the Austro-Hungarian Navy's efforts to protect its territorial waters and maintain control of the Adriatic Sea. Despite their valiant efforts, the Central Powers ultimately suffered defeat in the war, and the Austro-Hungarian Navy was disbanded following the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. This photograph is a testament to the bravery and determination of the Austro-Hungarian sailors who served aboard the SMS Csikos and other destroyers during the First World War. It is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women who served their countries during this tumultuous period in history.
