EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph from 1876, refugees from the war-torn regions of Herzegovina and Bosnia, who had fled from the conflict with Turkey, are seen gathered outside a grand hotel in Dubrovnik, Croatia, then known as Ragusa. The historical city, with its stunning Adriatic Sea backdrop, was a popular destination for wealthy Europeans during the late 19th century. The refugees, desperate and destitute, are seen begging from these well-to-do travelers, their pleas for assistance a stark reminder of the devastating impact of war on innocent civilians. The war between Turkey and various Balkan states, which began in 1875, caused widespread devastation and displacement. The refugees, who had lost their homes and livelihoods, were forced to seek shelter and assistance from neighboring countries. Dubrovnik, with its reputation as a prosperous and cosmopolitan city, became a refuge for many of these displaced persons. Despite the grandeur of the hotel and the elegantly dressed tourists, the scene outside its doors is one of desperation and despair. The refugees, huddled together in the cold and rain, hold out their hands in the hope of receiving some small measure of assistance. The contrast between the opulence of the hotel and the poverty of the refugees serves as a powerful reminder of the human cost of war. This photograph, taken over a century ago, remains a poignant reminder of the enduring human suffering that often accompanies armed conflict. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of compassion and empathy in times of crisis. The image also highlights the historical significance of Dubrovnik, a city that has borne witness to many momentous events throughout the centuries.
