EDITORS COMMENTS
B.A.T. FK.22 Bantam I F9947: A Pioneering Step Forward in Aviation This photograph showcases the B.A.T. FK.22 Bantam I F9947, the second of fifteen pioneering aircraft built by the British Aerial Transport Company (BAT) and designed by the visionary Dutch engineer Frederick Koolhoven. The Bantam I, a smaller version of the Bantam II, was produced in 1919 and marked a significant milestone in the history of aviation. The Bantam I was a single-seat, biplane fighter, designed with an innovative fuselage made of plywood and fabric, which reduced its weight and increased its maneuverability. Its wingspan measured just 25 feet 6 inches, making it one of the smallest military aircraft of its time. The Bantam I was powered by a 110 horsepower Le Rhone rotary engine, enabling it to reach impressive speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. Fifteen Bantam I and Bantam II aircraft were built, with the larger Bantam II serving in small numbers with the Royal Air Force. The Bantam I, however, did not see active military service due to its limited performance and range. Nevertheless, it played an essential role in the development of aviation technology and paved the way for more advanced aircraft designs. This photograph captures the Bantam I in its glory, standing proudly on the ground with its distinctive wings spread wide. The image is a testament to the groundbreaking achievements of the British Aerial Transport Company and Frederick Koolhoven in the field of aviation, demonstrating their innovative spirit and commitment to pushing the boundaries of what was possible in the early days of flight.
