EDITORS COMMENTS
Perseus, the legendary Greek hero, bravely comes to the rescue of the beautiful princess Andromeda, who is about to become a monstrous sea creature's lunch. In this print from Mary Evans Prints Online, we see Perseus in the midst of slaying the fearsome beast, with Andromeda looking on in awe and relief. This historical image, filled with rich folklore and mythology, tells the tale of Perseus, who was sent on a quest by King Polydectes to bring the head of the Gorgon Medusa as a sign of his love for Andromeda. Along the way, Perseus encountered various challenges and creatures, including the sea monster depicted in this print. The sea monster, a terrifying creature of the deep, had been sent by the vengeful god Poseidon as punishment for Andromeda's mother Cassiopeia's arrogance. The monster was to devour Andromeda as retribution for her mother's boast that she was more beautiful than the sea nymphs. Perseus, however, was not one to back down from a challenge. Armed with the legendary shield of Athena and the mirrored shield of Hephaestus, he approached the sea monster with courage and determination. With a swift strike, Perseus plunged his sword into the monster's heart, freeing Andromeda from its jaws. This print, with its intricate details and vivid colors, brings to life the heroism and bravery of Perseus, as well as the danger and intrigue of the ancient world. A true masterpiece of historical and mythological art, it is a testament to the enduring power of storytelling and the human spirit.
