EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the thrilling moment when French aviator Louis Paulhan narrowly outpaced British pilot Grahame White in their historic race from London to Manchester on April 28, 1910. Both pilots took off from the Shepherd's Bush Aerodrome in London, each determined to be the first to reach Manchester. Their aircraft of choice were identical Farman biplanes, making the competition all the more intense. Paulhan, seen here skillfully landing his plane en route, managed to edge past White by just a few minutes, covering the 220-mile distance in approximately 5 hours and 20 minutes. The close proximity of their planes in this image serves as a testament to the intense rivalry between these early aviation pioneers. The Farman biplane, a marvel of early aviation technology, was a popular choice among pilots during this era due to its robust design and reliable performance. With its wooden fuselage and fabric-covered wings, this aircraft represented the cutting edge of transport technology in the early 1900s. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the early days of aviation history, a time when record-breaking flights and daring races captured the public's imagination and paved the way for the modern aviation industry.
