This striking image captures the moment of homecoming for General Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck as he returns to Berlin after the conclusion of the First World War. Von Lettow-Vorbeck, a renowned German army officer, is seen here riding on horseback during a triumphant parade through the streets of the German capital. Having led the German East Africa Campaign as its commander, he had managed to evade capture by Allied forces for over six years, making him the last German general to surrender in the war. His remarkable military feat earned him the nickname "The Lion of Africa." The general's return to Berlin on 2 March 1919 marked the end of an epic chapter in both his military career and the history of the First World War. The image, taken during the parade, testifies to the respect and admiration the German people held for their tenacious commander, even in the aftermath of a devastating war.
