EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the scene at the British Red Cross Hospital at Netley in Hampshire during World War I. Established in 1887, the hospital became a vital center for the care and treatment of wounded and invalided soldiers from the front lines. In this image, two of the temporary huts, Ivy Hut and Oxfordshire Hut, are shown. The huts were erected to accommodate the influx of patients during the war years. The soldiers, some with bandaged heads and limbs, can be seen sitting outside, enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. The hospital grounds were meticulously tended, with gardens and trees providing a sense of tranquility and respite from the harsh realities of the war. The Red Cross volunteers and medical staff worked tirelessly to provide comfort, care, and rehabilitation to the soldiers, who had sacrificed so much for their country. This poignant snapshot from October 1917 offers a glimpse into the daily life of the Home Front during World War I, a time when the British people came together to support and care for their wounded soldiers.
