This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the enchanting Twinflower, Linnaea borealis, also known as Linnea boreale or Linnaea laurina, a small herbaceous plant native to the northern hemisphere. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The Twinflower derives its common name from its unique pair of flowers, each with five petals, which bloom on the same stem. The plant is also known by various other names, including Erythroxylum laurifolium and erythroxylon feuilles de laurier, due to its resemblance to laurel leaves. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical artists of the 19th century. Turpin's meticulous attention to detail and mastery of the stipple engraving technique are evident in this stunning representation of the Twinflower. The plant is shown here with its lush, green leaves and delicate, pink-tinged flowers, which bloom in early spring.
