EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handfinished chromolithograph depicts a beautiful arrangement of five different thistle species: the Showy Mexican Scarlet Thistle (Erythrolaena conspicua), Arabian Cotton Thistle (Onopordum arabicum), Blue-Flowered Carthamus (Carthamus caeruleus), Showy Mexican Scarlet Thistle, and the Arabian Cotton Thistle. The intricate details of each thistle are expertly captured in this lithograph by Henry Noel Humphreys, based on an original illustration by Jane Loudon from her book "Mrs. Jane Loudon's Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Perennials," published in London in 1849. The Showy Mexican Scarlet Thistle, with its vibrant red flowers and prickly leaves, stands proudly at the center of the composition. To its left, the Arabian Cotton Thistle displays its distinctive white flowers and fluffy seed heads. In the foreground, the Blue-Flowered Carthamus adds a burst of color with its bright blue blooms. The two thistle species on the right, while not identified in the title, can be distinguished by their green leaves and tall, spiky flowers. Thistles are known for their distinctive, prickly leaves and showy flowers, making them popular ornamental plants in gardens around the world. This exquisite lithograph not only showcases the beauty of these plants but also highlights the skillful artistry of Henry Noel Humphreys and Jane Loudon.
