EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Commonwealth CA-16 Wirraway A20-649 (msn 1101) during an airshow at Point Cook in the late 1970s. At the time, this historic aircraft was part of the Royal Australian Air Force Museum's collection. The CA-16 Wirraway is a classic Australian-designed training aircraft, which first flew in 1934. It served the RAAF with distinction during World War II, and was later used for various roles including target towing and aerobatics. The Wirraway in this image, with its distinctive rounded canopy and RAAF markings, was one of over 900 built between 1934 and 1941. After its military service, it was eventually transferred to the museum. However, in the mid-1970s, it was sold to the United States and exported. The exact date of this photograph is circa 1977, capturing a poignant moment in the Wirraway's history as it prepared to embark on a new chapter in a foreign land. This photograph is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Wirraway, which continues to be celebrated as an icon of Australian aviation. Its story is one of innovation, courage, and resilience, reflecting the spirit of the men and women who designed, built, and flew these remarkable aircraft. This image offers a unique glimpse into the past, providing a fascinating insight into the history of military aviation and the enduring allure of flight.
