The Misheard Coal Order
EDITORS COMMENTS
- A humorous 20th-century comic postcard depicting a scene of misunderstanding and amusement in a British shop. A plump woman, her basket brimming with shopping, stands at the counter of a store, her face contorted in annoyance and dissatisfaction. She is surrounded by a group of onlookers, including a bewildered shop assistant and a smirking man, all staring at the woman in disbelief. The woman, with a determined expression, demands, "I'd like six sacks of coals, please!" The assistant, equally perplexed, replies, "I'm sorry, madam, but we only sell coal by the bag." The woman, not one to be easily deterred, insists, "No, I want six sacks, not bags!" The scene escalates as the assistant tries to clarify the misunderstanding, while the onlookers exchange knowing glances and stifle their laughter. This comic postcard, by the renowned British illustrator Donald McGill, is a delightful reminder of the humorous misunderstandings and misheard requests that can occur during the course of everyday shopping. The use of exaggerated body types and facial expressions adds to the humor, making this a fun and lighthearted addition to any collection.
