EDITORS COMMENTS
John Alcock (1430-1501), a distinguished English prelate of the late medieval period, is depicted in this evocative portrait as the Bishop of Ely. The image, created around the turn of the 16th century, captures Alcock in his ecclesiastical robes, signifying his high rank within the Catholic Church. The intricately designed mitre and crozier, symbols of his episcopal authority, sit atop his head and rest in his hands, respectively. Born in Suffolk, England, Alcock began his ecclesiastical career as a monk at the Benedictine Abbey of Bury St. Edmunds. He later became a priest and rose through the ranks to become the Bishop of Ely in 1474. Alcock's tenure as Bishop was marked by his dedication to the welfare of his diocese and his commitment to the education of the clergy. He founded a college at Ely Cathedral, which would later become the famous King's College, and oversaw the construction of the magnificent octagonal lantern on the cathedral's west front. Alcock's reign as Bishop of Ely was also notable for his involvement in the political climate of the time. He served as a royal chaplain to King Edward IV and was a trusted advisor to the monarch. Alcock's influence extended beyond the borders of his diocese, as he played a key role in the negotiations that led to the marriage of King Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, which helped to end the Wars of the Roses and usher in the Tudor dynasty. This portrait of John Alcock, Bishop of Ely, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who played a significant role in the religious and political history of medieval England. His legacy continues to be felt in the beautiful structures he helped to create and the lasting impact he had on the Church and the monarchy.
